From Milan to Chicago, to New York and back, the journey with 3M Architectural Markets and Todd Bracher has been a brilliant one, finding inspiration and collaboration across the world. The members of the 3M AM team were first introduced to Bracher at Salone Internazionale del Mobile during Milan Design Week, the debut exhibit for Architectural Markets after being established in 2010. It wasn’t until after they reconnected at NeoCon in 2011 that Bracher and 3M AM decided that together they could create something brilliant, beyond what just one of them could do alone.
Enter in: Bracher’s unparalleled design capabilities and 3M’s proprietary reflective film and physics-driven history. Working together for over a year, an understanding and creative relationship formed between Bracher and 3M AM. Both knew where they wanted to take light, and together they figured out how to do so while keeping green design top-of-mind. Thus born was Lightfalls, a “virtual LED” system that takes energy efficiency and decorative LED lighting to a whole new level.
Lightfalls is a one-of-a-kind, state of the art light fixture that uses 3M’s 98% reflective film to bounce light across a room in linear, circular, or organic ways. Together, Bracher and the 3M AM team debuted Lightfalls at WantedDesign during New York Design Week in May, where the response was overwhelmingly positive. Over 60 million media impressions later, it’s safe to say the duo made a dramatic entrance into the decorative LED lighting world.
While the 3M AM team is quick to praise Bracher for his work, Bracher is equally gracious in making sure that people around the world know that Lightfalls is less about design, and more about physics, physics that are only possible within the walls of 3M.
“Lightfalls is only achievable in collaboration with 3M. Their film is the most reflective in the world, and the shape of the Lightfalls [spheres] are determined by the physics and engineering of the LEDs, not determined by fashion or design,” Bracher said.
Certainly, this isn’t the last you’ll hear of the Bracher and 3M AM collaboration. As they work to commercialize Lightfalls for a launch in 2013, both look forward to work not just on Lightfalls, but in projects to come in the future. For this dynamic duo, it’s just the beginning.
